Design Features

Below are some of the key features of the Remington #HC4250 Shortcut Pro Self-Haircut Kit.

Hair Clipper Type

The Remington Shortcut pro hair clipper is a cordless hair clipper and in fact makes our list as one of the best cordless hair clippers to buy.

The fact that it is cordless makes it much easier to handle and use it as it has no cord attached to it…

especially if you are going to be cutting your own hair by yourself… which is exactly what this hair clipper has been designed for.

Since this is cordless you are also not limited to the cord length. You can also use it anywhere you choose without having to be close to an electrical socket in the room.

Heck the cordless feature means that you can even take this into the shower and use it which is even more brilliant.

man using the Remington Shortcut Pro Kit
man using the Remington Shortcut Pro Kit

No wires getting tangled up and or wrapping round you whilst you try and cut your hair…. which is one of the biggest problems you would have encountered if you have ever used a corded hair clipper to try and cut your own hair by yourself

Whilst you don’t have the same kind of cutting power as you would with a traditional corded type of hair clipper, this hair clipper comes with razor sharp blades to still give you the perfect hair cut.

When fully charged, the Remington shortcut Pro is designed to give you up to 40 minutes of running time which is enough to get you through several hair cutting sessions.

Considering the fact that a normal buzz cut should take about maximum 10 mins for a person without no experience of cutting hair, you will definitely have enough juice left in the clipper to last you about 2 – 3 cuts.

If you just intend to use the clippers for a quick trim, then you should be able to get more cuts out of the clipper with every full charge you make

The Remington Shortcut Pro is not the best in terms of the length of running time especially when you compare it to some of the other cordless hair clippers on the market such as the Philips Norelco QC5580/40 Do-It-Yourself Hair Clipper Pro which has a running time of about 60 minutes on a full charge….

but that’s not a deal breaker as the Remington Shortcut Pro is designed not for giving multiple hair cuts but for the “do it yourself” owner who wants to cut his/her own hair. You will have enough time with this clipper to get through at least 2 cuts however inexperienced or slow you are.

Another good thing about the Remington Shortcut Pro hair clipper is that if you run out of charge at any time, this clipper can also be plugged directly into the mains to use as a mains corded hair clipper.

With both options for cordless and corded, you have maximum versatility available at your fingertips – or should we say your palms?

You do not need to worry about running out of juice in the middle of a haircut…

No need of you having to wait around for the device to charge up when you are in a middle of a cut….it can simply be plugged in and used.

You cannot however charge the device when using it as a mains powered hair clipper as the clipper has to be in the off position to commence the charging process

The fact that it is cordless though means that you can always charge it up and take away on holidays with you. The charge generally holds for about a month.

Power System & Running Time

The Remington Shortcut Pro is powered by a Lithium battery.

Lithium powered hair clippers tend to have more torgue and last longer than clippers fitted with the old NIMH rechargeable batteries.

The Remington Shortcut Pro Lithium batteries deliver high-impact, long lasting power which gives up to 40-minutes straight cutting cordless usage when fully charged.

Bearing in mind that the typical buzz cut is less than 5 minutes, this means that you will have enough juice to last you several hair cuts.

Those who are looking to just clean up around the edges and trim off a little bit will find that this lasts an extremely long time.

The Remington Shortcut Pro takes about four hours to charge fully and has an indicator light to make it easy to know when the device is charging and when the clipper is fully charged.

The light blinks when it is charging and stays on full when the unit is fully charged.

The indicator light are quite a welcome feature to have on the clippers as not all cordless hair clippers have this feature and it makes it much easier to know when the clipper is fully charged or not

The Remington Shortcut Pro also has a “QUICK-CHARGE” mechanism, which when used gives you a full 5 minutes of emergency use (which is enough time to complete a quick buzz cut)

The “Quick-Charge” feature can also be quite useful if you run out of charge during a hair cut (highly unlikely but still possible)…

The quick charge feature is not common among cordless clippers, which another innovative feature of Remington.

All you need to achieve the Quick Charge is charge the Clipper for 10 minutes and you will have all the power you need for that all important trim.

The Remington Shortcut Pro allows for not only cordless capabilities, but also for corded in case you don’t have time to recharge the battery as soon as possible.

The charging cable is 6 ft long, so if you forget to charge the clippers then you can run them from the mains and have cable enough to maneuver.

The only downside is that you cannot charge and use this clipper at the same time. The clipper must be in the off position to get it charged.

And if you’re on the go and in need of a last-minute cut, a handy ten minute quick charge will give you all the power you need for that all important trim.

Motor Type & Size

It’s not quite clear what type of motor is in the Remington Shortcut Pro clipper as the manufacturer has not been forthcoming in any of its literature about the type or size of the motor in the clipper.

The motor of the Remington Shortcut Pro is however not as powerful as the one found in the more traditional hair clippers, but it still powerful enough to give a professional looking hair cut.

What it lacks in power, it makes up for in it’s size and weight which is a fair trade off.

The Remington Shortcut Pro Clipper works best when fully charged or when used as a mains corded hair clipper.

To get the Remington Shortcut Pro motor working at full capacity, the clipper should be well maintained and care taken with the blades. A small bottle of oil is included for easy maintenance.

Hair Cut Length Settings

The Remington Shortcut Pro is very versatile and can be used to achieve a range of hair cut styles and lengths ranging from 0.5mm (1/32 of an inch) to 15mm (5/8 of an inch).

You can easily achieve various hair length settings by using the proprietary set of guide combs that accompany the clipper in the kit.

No need for you to purchase any additional guide combs as the kit comes will all the guards you need.

The clipper blade itself is fixed on the Remington Shortcut Pro. Using the clipper without any of guide combs that come with it will enable you achieve a cut as low as 0.5mm which is 1/32 of an inch.

Not quite a complete bald effect like the Wahl Balding Clipper can deliver but on the same level as a lot of the main type hair clippers can achieve.

The design of the Remington Shortcut Pro means that you are able to achieve a more even hair cut and also achieve it much faster than traditional clippers as a result of the large curved blades.

In terms of using the Remington Shortcut pro to achieve various hair styles… it is possible as all you need to do is combine the clipper with different hair combs to achieve the style you want.

The Remington Shortcut pro however works best for those who want an all over short buzz cut that is even throughout the head.

Blade Type & Size

The Remington Shortcut Pro clipper is fitted with an innovative extra wide curved blade.

The extra wide cutting blades really does make things faster and easier as it offers 57% more coverage than standard hair clipper blades thus resulting in quicker hair cuts.

Remington Shortcut Pro Blade
Remington Shortcut Pro Blade is wide and curved

The extra wide curved blades are designed to contour to the angles of the head to provide a more even close cut in less runs than standard hair clippers can.

The extra-wide curved blade, allows the device to perfectly contour your head without missing a spot.

You won’t have to worry about not receiving a close cut that’s even, as the Remington HC4250 outperforms many of those on the market.

Most of its precision has to do with the manufacturing of the blades, as the stainless-steel grade A dream machine is composed of the high-quality metals and the perfect curvature.

The downside though is that the blade for this model is not a replaceable part that Remington carry for this model. These should last through at least the warranty of the device. The blades cannot also be sharpened.

The good news though is that the blades that come with the hair clipper are self sharpening and therefore there is no need to have to sharpen the blades over the lifespan of the clipper… All you need to do is all and clean the blade after each use to maintain it in peak performance

The blades are great for those who have thin hair and thick hair alike, with minimization of snagging and pulling more coarse hair.

Using the clipper without any of the guards that come with the clipper will enable you achieve a hair cut length setting of 0.5mm

Weight & Dimension

The Remington Shortcut Pro is quite different from the traditional hair clippers and more of the shape of a mouse which fits perfectly into the palms of your hand.

It measures roughly the following

Length : 3 inches
breadth: 3 inches
height: 2 inches

When you compare the length of the Remington Shortcut Pro (3 inches) to a lot of home use hair clippers averaging 6 inches in length…It is pretty small.

In terms of weight…. It weighs in at only 0.83g which is also a lot lighter than most home hair clippers on the market.

The fact that it so light weight makes it so much easier for you to maneuver around your head.

You can easily use it to trim hairs on the neck, sideburns and behind the ears for complete detailing.

This is a much needed feature as the Remington Shortcut pro is designed for the user who wants to cut his/her own hair.

Electrical Requirements

charger unit for Remington shortcut pro hair clipper
Charger unit for Remington shortcut pro hair clipper not Universal Voltage Rating

The Remington Shortcut Pro Hair Clipper is an American made product and as such comes with a 2 prong shaver-plug charger. It needs a 120 volt 60HZ electrical socket to operate it effectively.

The only downside with the power system is that Remington did not make this clipper with a world wide voltage system so that it can work in whatever country you are located in.

If you are purchasing this hair clipper in the USA to use outside of the USA in another country, you are most likely to need a step down transformer which is an extra expense.

The good news though is that you can buy an European version or a UK version with no need for you having to purchase an additional charger

The UK version is called the Remington Quick Cut Clipper kit. It has all the same features, works the same way but comes with an approved safety isolating adaptor PA-4515U (for the United Kingdom) with the output capacity of 4.5 Vdc; 1500mA (adaptor output). (click here to see UK Version)

Accessories

Guide Combs

The Remington Shortcut Pro also comes with 9 different plastic guide combs which have been specifically developed by Remington to fit the extra-wide curved blade system which the Remington Shortcut pro uses.

The fact that the Shortcut pro comes with its own hair clipper guides is a positive thing as it enables you achieve various hair cut styles and lengths with your clipper.

To achieve your desired length, all you need to do is attach any of the plastic guide combs to the clipper.

The actual guide combs that the clipper comes with are as follows:

3.0mm1/8 inch1

Guide Size (mm) Guide Size (inches) Guide Size (label)
1.5mm 1/16 inches 0
2.0mm 5/64 inches
2.5mm 3/32 inches
4.5mm 3/16 inches
6.0mm 1/4 inches 2
9.0mm 3/8 inches 3
12mm 1/2 inches 4
15mm 5/8 inches 5

The lengths settings of each of the combs included in the kit are inscribed unto the back of the combs to make it easy for you to identify the right hair clipper guides to use.

image of Remington Shortcut hair clipper guide comb
Length settings are inscribed on the back of the guide combs for easy settings

All you need to use the guide combs is you have to push the comb unto the back of the clipper blade till it snaps into place.

The plastic clipper guides do fit snugly unto the Remington Shortcut pro hair clipper so there is no risk of it dropping off when cutting your hair as it tends to happen in some other home use hair clippers.

One major complaint by a lot of users about the guide combs included in the kit, is that the biggest guide comb size will when used, only be able to leave a maximum length of 15mm (5/8 inches) of hair after use.

This is a pretty short length and to some people much shorter than what they are comfortable with when you consider that some hair clipper guards can reach up to 25mm (1 inch) as in clippers like the Wahl Color pro.

The short cut pro hair clipper is therefore best for people who want a short haircut. You can easily achieve haircuts between 0.5mm (when used without a clipper guard) to lengths of 15mm (with the biggest clipper guide in the kit)

The guide combs are also a proprietary product, that is the guards are made specifically by Remington for the Shortcut pro…

so unlike other hair clipper guide combs that have a lot of other 3rd party manufacturers or guide combs that will fit, there are no other hair clipper guides on the market that can fit unto the Remington Shortcut Pro neither will it fit unto another clipper.

The good news though is that if at all your clipper guards get damaged, You can easily replace the clipper guide combs, as the manufacturer, Remington, does sell the replacement guards….. however, it must be noted that the clipper guards are not protected under the warranty that comes with the hair clippers.

Storage

The Remington Shortcut Pro hair clipper comes with a small travel pouch for storage purposes.

It’s small enough to take with you on holiday.

The only problem is that the travel pouch supplied with the kit can only hold the hair clipper device itself but with little or no space for any of the hair clipper guide combs that come in the kit.

Alternative Remington Shortcut hair clipper
Worth investing in a bigger case to hold all your Remington Shortcut hair clipper kit

It is always best to keep the clipper and the guards together as the last thing you want is to have to be searching around for the guide combs and other accessories when you need it

Although at an additional expense, it might be worth investing in a bigger storage case to keep all the hair clipper guide combs and the hair clipper neatly together.

The storage case will not only help protect the clippers but also represents a good gift to someone who might also already have a Remington Shortcut Pro hair clipper

Additional Accessories

In additions to the comb and storage pouch that come in the Remington shortcut hair clipper kit are a range of items to help you maintain your hair clipper in peak performance.

The items are

  • Blade Oil – You get a small bottle of blade oil for the clipper – The oil is essential to keep the clipper in top shape. You will need to apply a few drops of the oil when you clean the unit and/or before use… the clipper oil will last you for some time before you need to replace the oil.
  • Hair Clipper Brush – You also get a hair clipper brush to help you remove hair from the clipper and for cleaning the hair clipper.

You also have included a set of instructions to help you make better use of the device.

Performance

The Remington Shortcut Clipper Pro Haircut Kit has everything you need for a quality haircut at home.

The ergonomic design fits comfortably in your hand and the curved blade works with the natural shape of your head so self-haircuts are comfortable and precise.

Lithium power provides up to 40 minutes of cordless run time, and corded/cordless function ensures you have enough power to finish what you started

This item is meant for shorter cuts that is why there are no hair clipper guides longer than 15mm (5/8 of inch) for this model.

A disadvantage to this product is that if you do have thick hair, you will have to make sure it’s brushed evenly and thoroughly, or else there will be some snagging.

For thick hair that’s perfectly brushed and maybe even separated, this self-haircutting kit will do just fine. All you need to do is take a couple of slow passes at very long hair and you end up being just fine.

The Remington Shortcut Pro #HC4250 is aimed primarily towards those who want a hand held head shaver for something quick, simple, and easy at home.

If you are a mom looking to save a bit of money on haircuts for your kids – this device is also for you. While definitely not for professional use, this hair clipper is a great buy for a home user.

It’s also important to note that the cleaning process for this item is very easy and time-efficient, as all you need do is,,, wash the blades under the tap without having to go through any lengthy process.

While the clippers do come with a good range of attachments that in theory allows you to, say, trim the hair at the back and sides whilst leaving the hair longer on top …..in practice this is hard to achieve on your own

The blades are great for those who have thin hair and thick hair alike, with minimization of snagging and pulling more coarse hair.

Build Quality

The Remington Shortcut Pro is quite compact and made of plastic material.

It is not shatter proof… so it is likely to shatter if dropped unto a hard floor surface but that is like most of the hair clippers on the market

It does look well built though and the guards do fit snugly unto the clipper itself

Would have been good if the clipper blade itself came with a clipper guard to help protect it bearing in mind that the blade is non replaceable on this clipper.

Noise Level

The Remington shortcut Pro hair clipper still has the humming sound associated with traditional hair clippers but nothing as loud as most of them.

It is a lot quieter than a lot of the plug in hair clippers on the market

The loud ‘thunk’ associated with hair clippers when switched on is absent too!

The fact that this clipper is fast and quiet makes it a good contender for clippers that are suitable for use on children’s hair as it is less likely to frighten them especially with the noise.

Ease of Use

The Remington shortcut Pro hair clipper is quite easy to use even if you have no experience of ever cutting your own hair before.

The best part about the palm-sized design is that it fits perfectly in the hand, and the curved blade makes light work of zipping up and down your head,

allowing you to reach those pesky places like the back of your head, neckline and even tough places that are around your ears.

For the size and shape, it takes some getting used to it for one to do an efficient self cut. It might feel awkward the first few handling, but that is because it is a paradigm shift from the traditional clipper shape…

but once you get the hang of it… it is so easy to use.

The large blade makes it really quick and easy to shave your hair. The only downside is that the more precision areas (around ears etc) can be a little awkward to get to.

It can also be fiddly to get a decent result if you have (or are looking for) a hair style that is not one particular length.

On the flip side, it is perfect for buzz cuts. It very easily cuts hair evenly, seems very sharp and easy to use, The curved front draws the hair into the blade avoiding tramlines

It also comes with a set of user instructions which includes some write-up to help you achieve styles other than the quick buzz cut that this hair clipper is best for.

Once finished, it’s a case of brushing off the worst of the hair, and rinsing the blade under running water. There is a little vent into which the water runs, to direct it over the blade for cleaning purposes.

man using the Remington Shortcut Pro Kit
Man using the Remington Shortcut Pro Kit

It is also a fantastic travel companion as it wont take much space.

The length of time the battery lasts is also good because it give you enough time to cut your hair two or three times per full charge

The Remington Shortcut Pro Clipper is also washable. You can easily clean the blades under a regular tap without worrying about ruining the electric shaver.

The clip below shows a novice user cutting his hair for the first time on his own…

Watch to see how easy it is to use the Remington Shortcut Pro even without reading any of the instructions that come with it

Cleaning & Maintenance

The Remington Shortcut pro clipper is so easy to clean and maintain compared to a lot of the old traditional hair clippers.

Washing Remington Shortcut Pro Kit
Washing Remington Shortcut Pro Kit is also washable

The clipper is completely waterproof, so you can clean it easily under running water after use.

Just turn on the blades under running water and the water will dislodge any trimmed hairs.

For a more thorough cleaning, all you need to do is remove the blade assembly and wash it out separately.

After each wash, apply a small amount of the included blade oil to evenly distribute the oil. This will keep the clipper working at peak performance for every hair cut.

Replacement Parts

There are not a lot of replacement parts on the market for the Remington Shortcut Pro

One reason is that the Remington Shortcut Pro is shaped differently to a lot of the hair clippers on the market and most of the parts are proprietary in nature that is only manufactured by Remington.

The clipper blades that the Remington Shortcut clippers uses are proprietary and are not interchangeable with any other hair clipper blades on the market.

There are also no replacement parts for the blades as they are expected to last the lifetime of the clipper.

Luckily, the clipper blades on the Remington Shortcut are self maintaining so little or no maintenance is needed apart from the regular oiling advised by the manufacturer.

The good news is that the clipper guards are however replaceable and you can easily get that from the manufacturers site or Amazon. The guards are however not interchangeable with any Remington Clipper guards or any other of the major manufacturers such as Osters or Andis.

Taking into account shipping cost of some of the parts, you might be better off in some certain cases just purchasing a new replacement hair clipper than shelling out for a replacement part

User Ratings

There is an overwhelming support online for this hair clipper as users have continued to sing its praises with over 84% of buyers giving it 4.4 rating out of 5 on sites like Amazon.

Naturally there are some concerns raised by users too which are as follows:

A number of users … most of who were cutting their own hair by themselves for the first time felt that their should be ear guide combs included which is a trend among some of the common home user brands like the Wahl Color Pro

It makes it tricky to do smaller areas like round the rear as it’s a wide curve

The fact that the Remington Shortcut Pro comes with a small pouch was also an issue. A lot of users felt it would have better for the pouch supplied with the kit to be big enough to keep the clipper and all the clipper guides neatly together

Some would have preffered the clipper guides to come with more lewere also concerned about the the fact that the

This cuts a little shorter than I usually do my hair – would have preferred 1 or 2 more longer guards for it to be perfect.

The positives however did outweigh the negatives for this hair clipper.

Below are some of the comments made by other users

A Great clipper, light weight , compact that gives A Brilliant Performance
Better than any battery powered clippers that I have used. Nice close cut on afro hair even with the smallest comb. Nice handling too. Used several times on a 3 week vacation trip – without the need to recharge. I also have a well loved & used corded wahl clipper, but this is my new best friend.
Very good quality, easy to use and I love the way it all packs away neatly for traveling, would recommend
lovely handy clipper easy to use and quick with various level blades for different cutting lengths also quick and easy to clean

Warranty, Price & Value For Money

The Remington Shortcut Pro retails for between $30 and $50 depending on where you get them (Click to see latest price), which is a real bargain, especially when you consider the fact that everything you need to cut your own hair is included.

In most cases when you purchase a hair clipper, you usually end up going back to the store to pick up and extra brush or guide comb.

When you invest in the Remington HC4250 that will not be the case, because everything you need to cut your own hair at home is included.

The price also is very competitive when compared to similar products on the market which are not even as strong as the Remington HC4250 Shortcut Pro

With this easy and innovative set up, cutting your own hair at home and achieving desired results has truly never been easier. Once you see everything that this kit offers, you will without a doubt see why most consumers made this their go to hair cutting kit.

Final Thoughts

This is the perfect device for creating a buzzcut, trimming and keeping your neckline/sides tidy without having to go out and pay to have a professional cut.
